Dance for Parkinson's... 10:00 - 11:00 am
Information call 770-683-3724
In class, participants are empowered to explore movement and music in refreshing, enjoyable, stimulating, and creative ways.
Classes are based on the Dance for PD program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group in New York. The class is an aesthetic experience that uses narrative, imagery, music, and community to develop artistry and grace while addressing PD-specific concerns such as balance, flexibility, coordination, isolation, and depression. Cre partners are encouraged to participate at no charge.
Dance for Parkinson's is designed to offer numerous benefits to individuals with Parkinson's disease.
Dance classes help improve physical function by enhancing balance, coordination, flexibility, range of motion, and strength. Participants often experience reduced tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia (slow movement). Additionally, dancing can elevate mood, reduce stress, and increase social engagement, which is especially important for those who may feel isolated due to their condition. Earning new dance steps and routines provides a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and motivation.
- A study found that people with Parkinson's disease who participated in dance classes for 12 weeks improved their balance by an average of 15%.
- Another study reported that participants improved their gait speed by an average of 5% after ten weeks of dance classes.
- A third study showed a 25% reduction in anxiety symptoms after 12 weeks of dance classes.
- A fourth study noted a 10% improvement in the quality of life after ten weeks of dance classes.
Our participants have shared their personal experiences, reporting increased confidence in walking, less stiffness, and a greater sense of community.
Recognizing that most people with Parkinson's are older and on a fixed income, we offer the
Class for a $5.00 donation, ensuring accessibility for everyone.
